Station House Media Unit (shmu), established as a charity in 2003, is one of the core cultural organisations in Aberdeen, and is at the forefront of Community Media development in Scotland, supporting residents in the seven regeneration areas of the city in radio and video production, traditional and on-line publications, music production and digital inclusion. The organisation also supports other disadvantaged communities, both geographic and communities of interest, with an employability and training arm and a programme for offenders, both pre and post release.
So our website is live, as hopefully you can tell! We would like to take this opportunity to thank the team at Shmu, Web Design & Development. Our initial introduction to the team was through the Aberdeen City Council, C.A.N 2021 events, where there was a digital skills event hosted by Brian Woodcock from SHMU. This was a fantastic event, and highlighted the need we had to get an online presence, as well as correct steps to take. These steps, enabled us to do the best we could on our limited budget, whilst obtaining hosting and support from Shmu. To those who are fluid in web design, this may seem very basic, but for ourselves, we wanted to ensure we did things correctly moving forwards as a charity.
I, (Sam), have been a volunteer with Shmu the past 4 years, and they remain an incredible source of support, training and advice. It was great to work with Brian setting some initial plans in October 2021. However, following a rather hectic end of year, albeit the great news we had been awarded charitable status, I was not able to do as much as I had wished. There was no pressure from Shmu, they understood this, kindly offering advice and tips as and when was suitable.
This year I got stuck into things, working with their team. Neil McIvor has been fantastic in turning many ramblings into what could be possible, and as a result we have our initial framework up! Don’t get me wrong, it has many updates and changes to come, but this gives us a basis on which to build. As well as opportunities for other members of our community, charity, committee, board and all volunteers to contribute to this.

“We hope to continue with our Weds, packed lunch wellness show, 12pm. As well as with our articles for the local magazines, and hopefully more. Please don’t forget that anyone in Seaton & Linksfield neighbourhoods can get in touch with the team with latest news, updates and more. Any groups, services or businesses looking for a professional local media group, look no further!!”
This is just to say a huge thanks to all at Shmu, as well as a thanks to both Brian & Neil for their patience with me, and getting FRESH online! Sam & all our team at FRESH.
